Effective August 1, 2023, new minimum wage rates will take effect for all apprenticeship agreements, including those entered into prior to that date. This change was approved by the Executive Board of the Westfalen-Lippe Chamber of Tax Consultants and aims to ensure appropriate and fair compensation for trainees.
An overview of the new minimum remuneration rates.
The following remuneration rates will apply starting August 1, 2023, for the various years of training:
- Training year: €1,100.00
- Training year: €1,200.00
- Training year: €1,300.00
According to the relevant case law of the Federal Labor Court, the specified training remuneration rates may be exceeded by up to 20 percent in individual cases.
Why is the increase in training allowances important?
Motivation and willingness to perform
Appropriate pay is a decisive factor that influences trainees’ motivation and willingness to perform. When trainees feel they are being fairly compensated, it increases their identification with the company and their willingness to commit to its success.
Better training quality
Fair compensation allows trainees to focus fully on their training without being distracted by financial worries. This enables them to improve their willingness and ability to learn, which can have a positive impact on the quality of training.
Securing skilled workers
Companies that offer appropriate training stipends increase their chances that trainees will remain loyal to the company after completing their training. Retaining qualified skilled workers in the long term is crucial for counteracting the shortage of skilled workers.
Competitiveness
By offering attractive training conditions, employers can gain an advantage in the competition for talented young professionals. A positive reputation as an employer who fairly compensates trainees and supports their development can significantly enhance a company’s image.
Action Required for Employers
Employers should review the new minimum remuneration rates in a timely manner and ensure that their training contracts comply with legal requirements. If adjustments are necessary, they should be made promptly to avoid potential legal violations.
Furthermore, the increase in training allowances offers an opportunity to reevaluate and improve the company’s training programs as a whole. High-quality training that exceeds the legal minimum standards can further enhance the company’s appeal as a training provider and enable it to benefit from qualified young talent in the long term.
