Fraudulent emails sent in the name of ELSTER – Phishing attacks on the rise

31. March 2024

In today's digital age, phishing attacks have become a serious problem that threatens the security of online users. Phishing refers to the fraudulent method by which cybercriminals attempt to obtain personal information such as usernames, passwords, and financial data by posing as trustworthy sources. In this context, the Thuringian Ministry of Finance recently warned of an alarming wave of fraudulent emails being sent in the name of the online tax office ELSTER. These sophisticated phishing attacks aim to trick recipients into revealing sensitive information or installing malicious software on their computers.

Fraudulent emails in the name of ELSTER: The criminals’ scheme

The scammers behind the current phishing attacks have refined their tactics by sending emails with deceptively genuine subject lines such as "Final Notice – Outstanding Tax Balance from 2022" in the name of ELSTER. This approach is intended to gain citizens’ trust and persuade them to open the fraudulent content of the message.

Fake Websites as a Trap

Another insidious element of the phishing scam is the use of fake websites related to ELSTER. Recipients are prompted to fill out a purported form on these fake sites to receive a promised tax refund for the year 2022. The trick is that these fake websites have no connection whatsoever to the authentic ELSTER platform. The supposed incentive of a tax refund is used to trick victims into revealing personal information.

The Risks in Detail: Data Theft and Malware

The fraudulent emails are not only aimed at tricking unsuspecting taxpayers into visiting fake websites. Rather, the main goal is to obtain login credentials, account, and/or credit card information. By filling out the forms on the fake websites, victims could be handing their sensitive data directly to the criminals. Additionally, there is a risk that the fraudulent links in the emails could be used to install harmful viruses or Trojans on victims’ computers, which can lead to further security issues.

Warning from the Tax Administration and ELSTER

The Tax Administration and ELSTER have issued a clear warning against responding to these fraudulent emails or opening the links they contain. They emphasize that the Tax Administration never sends tax data or invoices as email attachments and does not request personal information via email. Citizens are urged to exercise extreme caution with emails purporting to be from ELSTER and, in case of doubt, to contact the official authorities directly to verify the authenticity of the communication.

Mindfulness when dealing with emails is crucial

The latest warning from the Thuringian Ministry of Finance once again underscores the need to be extremely vigilant in the digital space. The increasing sophistication of phishing attacks requires every internet user to be more vigilant and able to recognize suspicious emails. By acting with awareness and following security guidelines, we can help protect our personal data from the hands of unscrupulous fraudsters.
