Electric Car Incentives for 2026: How to Get Up to 6,000 Euros in Subsidies

10. July 2026

Anyone considering purchasing an electric car has had another good reason to take the plunge since the beginning of 2026. The federal government has launched a new subsidy program that provides financial support for the purchase or lease of an electric vehicle. Applications can be submitted immediately through the Förderzentrale Deutschland portal. The program is specifically aimed at low- and middle-income households.

Which vehicles are eligible for the subsidy?

The requirement is that the vehicle must have been registered in Germany for the first time on or after January 1, 2026. It must be a new vehicle in vehicle class M1—that is, a passenger car. Eligible vehicles include battery-electric vehicles, electric cars with range extenders, plug-in hybrids, and fuel cell vehicles. Both the purchase and the lease of an eligible vehicle qualify for the subsidy.

Who can apply for the subsidy?

The subsidy program is limited to private individuals. Companies, self-employed individuals, or legal entities are not eligible to apply. The decisive factor is the annual taxable household income: it may not exceed 80,000 euros.

Higher limits apply to families with children. For each child under the age of 18, the threshold increases by 5,000 euros, but only for a maximum of two children. A family with two or more minor children can therefore apply for the subsidy if their taxable income is up to 90,000 euros.

How much is the subsidy?

The maximum subsidy is 6,000 euros. The actual subsidy amount depends on the vehicle selected, household income, and family size. A total of three billion euros in funding is available for the period from 2026 to 2029. According to estimates by the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA), this budget is sufficient for approximately 800,000 subsidized vehicles.

What should you keep in mind when applying?

Applications must be submitted exclusively through the Förderzentrale Deutschland online portal. Since the budget is limited and the subsidy program ends as soon as funds are exhausted, it is recommended to submit the application shortly after the vehicle is registered. Experience from previous subsidy programs shows that demand can be particularly high in the first few months.
