Childcare Costs – What Can You Deduct on Your Taxes?
Balancing family and work can be complicated. When both parents work, childcare is often necessary. With a bit of luck, grandparents or friends can step in to help out. In most cases, however, paid childcare is used. The costs for babysitters, child care providers, or daycare can be quite high. As tax advisors in Düsseldorf
and Oberhausen
, we are often asked by parents whether such costs can be claimed for tax purposes. In this article, we would like to provide a definitive answer to this question and explain what you should keep in mind regarding child care costs.
Which childcare costs are tax-deductible?
First of all, we can say: Yes, childcare expenses are tax-deductible. It doesn’t matter whether your child is enrolled in a childcare facility (daycare center or preschool) or goes to a childminder. These costs are deductible in any case. Childcare costs are also deductible if a caregiver comes to your home. So, it can be said that every form of childcare is deductible. However, it is important to note that only the costs for the childcare service itself are deductible. In-kind benefits, such as food for the child during childcare, are not tax-deductible.
The following costs are also not tax-deductible:
- Tuition (e.g., school fees, tutoring, or foreign language lessons)
- Training in special skills (e.g., music lessons, computer courses)
- Sports and other recreational activities (e.g., sports clubs, riding or dance lessons)
Benefits in kind provided to the caregiver are tax-deductible. An example of this would be if you provide the babysitter with a meal. If the caregiver comes to your home, travel expenses are deductible provided you have a corresponding receipt. If you drive your child to the facility yourself, travel expenses are not deductible.
Important! Cash payments are not tax-deductible. Only a bank transfer is sufficient as proof for the tax office. Additionally, you need an invoice for the respective service.
In addition to the basic aspects, there are special considerations in individual cases. It is therefore advisable to consult a tax advisor in case of doubt to avoid errors on your tax return. Our tax advisors in Düsseldorf and Oberhausen are happy to assist you.
Age limit for reimbursement of childcare costs
The tax benefit applies only to biological children or adopted or foster children under the age of 14. Exceptions apply to disabled children who are unable to support themselves. It should also be noted that the costs are only eligible for reimbursement if the child is a member of your household and is registered there.
Maximum amount for childcare costs
Childcare costs are tax-deductible only up to a maximum amount. Generally, only two-thirds of the expenses can be claimed. For these two-thirds, the annual maximum amount of €4,000 per child per year applies.
How are the expenses treated for tax purposes?
The costs of child care must be reported on your tax return. The deduction is treated as a special expense. Therefore, it cannot be claimed as income-related expenses or business expenses.
Are childcare costs compatible with other tax benefits?
We are often asked whether the tax benefits for childcare costs are compatible with other benefits for the child. The answer: Yes, you can easily claim childcare expenses alongside other tax benefits. Child benefits, the education allowance, or the relief amount for single parents are therefore not at risk.
